The natural habitat of Bhutan is home to more than six hundred species of birds. More birds are being discovered every year and special surveys are going on to identify the magnitude of bird life in the country. Experts tout Bhutan as a bird watcher’s paradise; for comparison there are less than 800 species of birds found in all of North America.
A total of 14 bird species recorded in Bhutan as listed as globally threatened birds. These include the White-bellied heron, the Chestnut –breasted Partridge, Blyth’s tragopan, the Wood Snipe and the beautiful Nuthatch, all of them breed in Bhutan.
The country is also an important wintering ground for the graceful Black Necked Crane, and other winter visitors.
