Take part in Laya Run a once-in-a-lifetime adventure through Bhutan’s pristine landscapes—culminating in the Laya Run, a challenging 25km alpine trail from Gasa to the remote village of Laya at 4,000 meters. Along the way, explore iconic sites like Tiger’s Nest Monastery, Punakha Dzong, and Dochula Pass. This journey blends high-altitude endurance with rich cultural immersion, farmhouse stays, and breathtaking Himalayan views.

Outline of the Journey

Flying into the Paro International Airport is a unique experience—due to its high-altitude Himalayan setting. Upon arrival, you’ll be warmly welcomed by your guide and transferred to your hotel. Your first visit will be to Rinpung Dzong, meaning “Fortress of the Heap of Jewels,” known for its rich history and exquisite wall paintings that depict Buddhist teachings. After exploring the dzong, you’ll visit Kyichu Lhakhang, one of Bhutan’s oldest and most revered temples. Later, enjoy a leisurely evening stroll through Paro town. Overnight at Khangkhu Resort, Paro or similar.

The hike to Tiger’s Nest Monastery (Taktsang) is one of the most iconic and spiritually significant experiences in Bhutan. Perched dramatically on a sheer cliff face at about 3,120 meters (10,240 feet) above sea level, Tiger’s Nest is a sacred pilgrimage site believed to be where Guru Rinpoche (Padmasambhava) meditated in the 8th century after flying there on the back of a tigress. About halfway up, there’s a cafeteria viewpoint where many hikers take a break or have lunch after having explored the monastery. Inside, the monastery complex houses several sacred shrines, and the atmosphere is deeply serene. Photography is not permitted inside, preserving the sanctity of the space. While physically demanding, the hike is rewarding both spiritually and visually — offering breathtaking views, rich cultural context, and a profound sense of peace. It’s a highlight of any trip to Bhutan. Return to Paro Valley and then drive to Thimphu. Overnight in Access Suites or similar.

After breakfast, begin your day with a visit to the King’s Memorial Chorten, a prominent spiritual landmark in Thimphu. Continue to Kuenselphodrang, where the towering 169-foot bronze Buddha Dordenma statue overlooks the Thimphu Valley. Continue to the Institute for Zorig Chusum (commonly known as the Painting School), followed by the Takin Preserve in Motithang. Next, embark on a scenic drive to Punakha. Make a stop at Dochu La Pass (3,140 meters) where you can see the breathtaking vistas of the snow-capped Himalayan ranges. From here, the road descends towards Punakha.  Overnight at a hotel in Punakha.

In Punakha, visit the magnificent Punakha Dzong, gracefully nestled between the Pho Chhu (male) and Mo Chhu (female) rivers, resembling a ship anchored at their confluence. You will then head to the longest suspension bridge adorned with colorful prayer flags fluttering in the wind. You will then drive to Gasa. Today you will spend a night in a farmhouse in Gasa.

25km, Ascent 1239 meters, End Elevation 4000 meters.

Today, you will retrace your steps along the same trail to return to Koena, where a farm road vehicle will meet you for the drive to Gasa village. From Gasa, you will switch vehicles and continue the journey to Punakha. The route takes you along high agricultural terraces overlooking the Mo Chhu. Upon arrival in Punakha, check in to your hotel. Overnight in Khuru Resort, Punakha.

Today, you will drive back to Paro via Dochula Pass and Thimphu. En route, stop at Metshina Village, and enjoy a short 20-minute walk through the fields to Chimi Lhakhang, the fertility temple. Continue to Thimphu where you will stop for lunch and take advantage of your final opportunity to explore the city and pick up any last-minute souvenirs. Continue your journey toward Paro. The evening is free for you to relax at your leisure. Overnight in Khangkhu Resort.

We bid you farewell.
